Collateral is an asset provided by a debtor to give a creditor priority rights to repayment from that asset if the debt is not fulfilled. In business transactions, a creditor may have collateral established over a counterparty's assets to mitigate the risk of bad debts from accounts receivable. This allows the secured creditor to be repaid in preference to other creditors.
