The mechanism by which an operating system organizes and manages files and directories on storage devices. It provides a uniform interface so that applications can access files without being aware of the underlying storage medium. Files are organized in a hierarchical tree structure rooted at the root directory, and locations are specified using either absolute paths (from the root) or relative paths (from the current directory).
