A server that acts as an intermediary for HTTP communication between a client (such as a PC) and a web server on the internet. The client sends its connection request to the proxy, which then contacts the target web server on the client's behalf and relays the data. Proxy servers are also used for caching to speed up access and for enforcing access control policies.
