Short for Intrusion Detection System, a mechanism that monitors networks or hosts to detect unauthorized access and suspicious communications and reports them to administrators. It comes in network-based (NIDS) and host-based (HIDS) variants. Unlike an IPS (Intrusion Prevention System), an IDS detects and reports but does not block traffic.
