The sixth version of the Internet Protocol, which expands the IP address length from the 32 bits of IPv4 to 128 bits. IPv6 was developed to solve the IPv4 address exhaustion problem; its 128-bit address space provides a virtually inexhaustible supply of addresses. IPv6 can coexist with IPv4, enabling parallel operation during the transition period.
