A production approach that manufactures or procures only what is needed, when it is needed, and in the quantity needed, minimizing work-in-process inventory between stages. It is a core concept of the Toyota Production System and is characterized by a pull-based flow in which downstream processes retrieve parts from upstream processes only as required. Production instructions are typically conveyed through cards called kanban.
