A mechanism that allows individuals to stop the use of their personal information or the sending of advertising messages by expressing their refusal. Unlike opt-in, which requires prior consent, opt-out treats permission as the default and stops the activity only upon the individual's request. Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information permits opt-out for certain purposes of information use.
