POP (Post Office Protocol) is a communication protocol used by email clients to retrieve email from a mail server. The current standard, POP3 (version 3), works by downloading stored messages from the server to the client for reading. Together with SMTP (used for sending mail) and IMAP (used for managing mail on the server), POP is one of the fundamental email protocols commonly tested in IT examinations.
