A port number is a numerical identifier used in TCP/IP to distinguish individual applications or services running on a computer. While an IP address identifies the computer itself, the port number specifies which application on that computer should handle the incoming communication. Well-known port numbers are assigned to major protocols, such as 80 for HTTP, 443 for HTTPS, and 25 for SMTP.
