A standard for encrypting and digitally signing email messages and attachments, standing for Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions. It uses public-key certificates to provide both sender authentication (digital signature) and end-to-end encryption readable only by the intended recipient. A sender must obtain their own public-key certificate before sending a signed message.
