A protocol that encrypts internet communications to prevent eavesdropping and tampering, standing for Secure Sockets Layer. Its successor, TLS (Transport Layer Security), is now the dominant standard. Used for HTTPS communication between browsers and web servers, it authenticates the server via a digital certificate and encrypts the entire communication channel.
