A protocol that encrypts internet communications to protect them from eavesdropping and tampering. When a browser accesses a site via HTTPS, SSL/TLS encrypts the communication in both directions between the browser and the web server. SSL is the older name; TLS (Transport Layer Security) is the current standard and offers stronger security.
