Wide Area Ethernet is a WAN service offered by telecommunications carriers that interconnects LANs at geographically dispersed locations directly using Ethernet technology, without the need for routers. From the user's perspective the remote sites appear as a single large LAN, making it easy to reuse existing network equipment. Compared with IP-VPN, it imposes fewer protocol restrictions and can transparently forward non-IP traffic.
