A character string of up to 32 alphanumeric characters used to identify a wireless LAN network. In environments with multiple access points forming an Extended Service Set (ESS), setting the same ESSID on each access point allows them to function as a single unified network. Used almost synonymously with SSID; a client device can connect only when its ESSID matches that of the access point.
