A just-in-time production method in which downstream processes signal upstream processes to produce or replenish only the parts needed, using cards or electronic tags (kanban) as the communication medium. By linking production instructions to actual demand, it minimizes inventory throughout the supply chain. In practice it is often integrated with procurement systems to automate replenishment orders.
