Scale-out is an expansion approach that increases processing capacity by adding more servers and distributing work across them in parallel. By contrast, replacing a server with a higher-performance machine or upgrading its CPU and memory is called scale-up. Scale-out is well-suited to systems that can be distributed horizontally, such as web services, and allows for incremental capacity expansion.
