The first standardized encryption protocol for IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs. WEP uses the RC4 cipher but has serious key-management vulnerabilities that allow it to be cracked quickly. Its use is no longer recommended, and migration to WPA2 or WPA3 is required. A successful intrusion into a WEP-protected network exposes the internet connection through that access point to unauthorized use.
